ALLENTOWN

PROUDLY SERVING ALLENTOWN, PA

landscape photo of the city of allentown, pa
Allentown, located in Northeast Pennsylvania on the Lehigh river, is the county seat of Lehigh County. It is the third most populous city in Pennsylvania, with a population of more than 118,000.

Allentown was founded in 1762 by William Allen, a former mayor of Philadelphia. The Lehigh River helped the city to grow during the industrial revolution, and Allentown was filled with flour mills, sawmills, saddle makers, wool mills, tobacconists. During the late 1800s and into the 1940s, Allentown became a major hub for iron production, railroading, beer brewing, brick making and finance.

While some manufacturing survives in Allentown, the city’s economy is now largely based on service industries, healthcare, transportation and warehousing. The largest employer in Allentown is the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network, which employs over 7,800 people. Many residents also work for the large, global corporations headquartered in Allentown, such as Air Products and Chemical and the PPL Corporation. Other major employers in Allentown include the Allentown School District, the Lehigh County Government, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Allied Personnel Services and Sacred Heart Hospital. Several other large employers are located just outside of Allentown, such as Crayola and the Alpo pet food company.

Allentown has been cited as a "national success story" in April 2016 by the Urban Land Institute because of the redevelopment of its downtown area, an achievement reached by only six other communities in the United States. The city boasts a number of museums and cultural organizations, including the Allentown Art Museum, the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, the Da Vinci Science Center, the Liberty Bell Museum and the Nineteenth Street Theatre. There are also many annual festivals, such as the Mayfair Festival of the Arts, the Great Allentown Fair and the Collegiate Marching Band Festival. Allentown is also famous for its wide range of historical architecture. The Center City Neighborhood contains a variety of Victorian and Federal Rowhomes and the West Park area contains many stately Victorian and Craftsman-style homes.
