Car Accident Lawyer: Do New Safety Features Really Improve Safety?

A car is one of the most precious possessions of an individual. People in the United States and all over the world fancy cars as also being a style statement and a means of echoing their status and personality. Apart from the fancy aspect of it, cars are of paramount importance because the advantages of having a vehicle of your own are many.

As a car owner, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to transportation. Consequently, the car manufacturers are constantly competing with each other to introduce newer features in the vehicles.

So, these days, you can own a car that has a powerful engine and can be driven at very high speeds. That being said, there is a negative aspect attached to all of these and that is the alarming rate at which car accidents occur. There are several cases of collisions and accidents often due to negligence resulting in such severity that the victims are required to consult a car accident lawyer and claim compensation. This has led to the necessity of more advanced safety features in automobiles.

What Brings the Safety Features into Play?

In most cases, a car accident attorney finds that it is the negligence of the manufacturer. For instance, the motivation to secure higher profits often leads them towards neglecting the safety features that a car must have. Simultaneously, several car accident victims have gone through the pain of catastrophic injury and they have also come to realize the importance of these safety features.

Thus the Government has become stricter in ensuring that these safety features are incorporated in the newly manufactured vehicles by the manufacturers. The ultimate aim is to reduce the number of car crashes victimizing innocents and leading to lawsuits in the future.

What Are Some of These Safety Measures?

Although the automobile industry has been constantly innovating features that improve the scenario and make the cars safer for all, here is a list of some of the most important safety features that have been introduced over the time:

  • Seatbelts – While seatbelts are a standard feature in all cars today, there was a time when cars used to be without them. Initially, after being introduced, the seatbelts used to have longer harnesses unlike the shorter one’s today.

  • Safety Glass – A safety glass is basically a windshield glass that breaks into small and round pieces instead of the jagged, sharp pieces of glass that have a high chance of injuring the driver right after they break down.

  • Anti-Lock Brakes – Anti-Lock Brakes allow braking within a short distance when pumped rapidly. This reduces the chances of the car skidding out of control should you be driving in conditions that could lead to a skid.

  • Airbags – Airbags are meant to inflate or deflate rapidly when there is a collision or a rapid sudden deceleration.

  • Back-Up Cameras – The backup cameras play a significant role in improving the rear view visibility system and are must in every car today.

  • Crumple Zones – These are the rear and the front bumpers that are designed to crumple and dissipate energy from the impact of a crash.

  • Engine Engineering – These engines can be directed underneath the passenger compartment of the car whenever there is an impact. The idea is to reduce the chance of crush injuries to both the driver and the passengers.

These are but only a handful of the safety features, the introduction of which has been crucial in improving automobile safety.

How successful have these safety features been?

The good news is that as per statistics furnished by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the number of car accidents has significantly reduced. For instance, fatalities from automobile crashed were 50% less than the same in 1975.

The scenario in the last few years was even better with a fewer number of car accident cases recorded in the civil court. So, the statistics put us in a better condition to claim that the safety features have been largely successful and continue to be so.

All said and done, car accidents are still common and they often result from other factors apart from the safety quotient of the car itself. So, if you or any of your acquaintances have faced a car accident resulting in injuries, you should consult an attorney at law and understand if filing a claim is necessary.
