PITTSBURGH

PROUDLY SERVING PITTSBURGH, PA

Pittsburgh, located in Western Pennsylvania, is the county seat of Allegheny County. It sits near the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. Pittsburgh is the second-largest city in Pennsylvania, with a population of over 305,000 people.

Pittsburgh began as a village in the mid-1700s and grew to become one of the most important industrial hubs in the country, producing millions of tons of iron, brass, tin, glass, and coal. Pittsburgh eventually received the name “steel city” for the massive steel industry that began in the late 1800s when Andrew Carnegie began steel production in the city. During World War II, Pittsburgh steelworkers produced 95 million tons of steel for the war. As manufacturing declined, Pittsburgh shifted from an industrial economy to a hub for education, finance, healthcare, high technology, and energy production.

A large number of Pittsburgh residents work in medicine, with over 116,000 jobs being held at local hospitals, outpatient clinics, and doctors’ offices. 48,000 of those Pittsburgh area residents work for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Many Pittsburgh residents also work in education, with the University of Pittsburgh employing almost 11,000 people. A wide range of other employers call Pittsburgh their home, including PNC Financial Services, PPG Industries, US Steel, Allegheny Technologies, BNY Mellon, GlaxoSmithKline, CONSOL Energy, and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Pittsburgh has consistently been voted as one of the most livable cities in the nation. Pittsburgh scores high for its relatively low cost of living, low crime, thriving restaurant scene and wealth of cultural and economic opportunities. Pittsburgh’s diverse economic culture and wealth of rapidly growing technology companies provide advancement opportunities to young professionals of all stripes. There are also a large number of educational institutions, such as the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University. People from all over the world come to study in a wide array of fields from medicine, to law, to theatre. Pittsburgh also provides residents with dozens of arts and cultural institutions, such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Dance Council, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum and the Pittsburgh Zoo.

Pittsburgh also has a long history with professional sports. Both the first professional football game and the first World Series were held in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is home to the Steelers, the Penguins, and the Pirates. All three teams share the City’s color scheme of black and gold, a feature that is unique to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh hosts several annual major sporting events, including the Three Rivers Regatta, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the Pittsburgh Marathon, and the Great Race 10k.
