NORRISTOWN

PROUDLY SERVING NORRISTOWN, PA

Norristown is a borough in Eastern Pennsylvania and the county seat of Montgomery County. It is located along the Schuylkill River roughly six miles outside of Philadelphia. With a population of more than 34,000 people, Norristown is the 4th most populous municipality in Montgomery County.

Norristown takes its name from Isaac Norris, who bought the land on which it sits from William Penn in the early 1700s. Norristown quickly grew from a small borough of 500 people to a major center of industrial, retail, banking and government activity. Norristown was home to several breweries, cigar factories, foundries, textile mills and lumber yards. Its downtown area used to feature several department stores, theaters, and shops.

In more recent times, Norristown’s economy has become more focused on the government, healthcare, legal and social services sectors. The Montgomery County Government is the largest employer in Norristown. Norristown is also home to the corporate headquarters of USM and U.S. Roofing. Other large employers include the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, the U.S. Roofing Corporation, Barton Partners, Chandler Bats and the Norristown Area School District.

Norristown is home to a vibrant arts community. The borough is home to the Montgomery County Cultural Center and the Centre Theatre. It is also the headquarters of Theatre Horizon, a professional theatre company that is part of the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. Norristown’s downtown area is populated by a wide range of ethnic restaurants, such as Minado, Desi Spice, Taqueria La Michoacana and Biryani City. Norristown has been the focus of a large revitalization and development effort. Former office buildings such as One Montgomery Plaza and the Sears building at the Studio Centre Shopping Center have been renovated as modern office buildings. New housing has also been added, such as the Regatta Apartments, the Rittenhouse Condominium Building and many new townhouses in the East End.

Norristown is also home to several historical attractions. The Elmwood Park Zoo, founded in 1924, is still in operation and hosts over 300 animals. Visitors can also enjoy the Selman Mansion, the Thaddeus Lowe House, the Old County Prison and the Schuylkill River Trail.
