Lawsuits Against “Roundup” Require Personal Injury Attorney's Attention

“Roundup" Lawsuits Against Monsanto Centralized in California

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has ruled that all thirty-seven lawsuits filed against Monsanto for cancers caused by their popular weed killer "Roundup” would be centralized in California.

The main ingredient in "Roundup,” which was developed by Monsanto in the 1970s, is glyphosate. Glyphosate is an herbicide used to kill and control weeds and other unwanted plants throughout the country. In the agricultural industry, "Roundup” has been sprayed on crops of corn and soybeans across the United States for decades - corn and soybeans that have been genetically modified to resist the chemical's deadly effects. “Roundup” is also a well-known consumer product and is sprayed onto walkways and other areas near homes and businesses to kill off weeds.

While Roundup is certainly an effective weed killer, modern research has found that glyphosate exposure over long periods of time can cause a variety of cancers in humans. In 2015, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared that glyphosate was probably a human carcinogen. The thirty-seven lawsuits were filed shortly thereafter against Monsanto on behalf of dozens of individuals who were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and other cancers after years of using the product. The suits allege that Monsanto knew the dangers and liabilities associated with its product, but failed to warn their customers and take adequate precautions.

Christine Sheppard, of California, was one of those patients affected by Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Prior to research being published about Roundup’s potential carcinogenic chemicals, she had no idea what could have caused the rare disease. Sheppard was in direct contact with the weed-killer Roundup as she frequently sprayed her coffee farm in Hawaii with it over a span of five years. Sheppard is just one of the 800 people suing Monsanto for failure to warn its consumers about the potential carcinogenic properties and dangers.

Monsanto fires back claiming that “probably carcinogenic” is not enough evidence for these allegations. Sheppard now suffers from decreased mobility in her arms and legs as a direct result of aggressive chemotherapy treatments. Her health is in decline as her age increases, and she fears she may lose her motor functions all together as the cancer progresses. Sheppard acknowledges the fact Monsanto will claim that Roundup did not cause her cancer but she’s seen numerous similar cases of hers which helps solidify her allegations.

When the carcinogenic effects of Roundup and its ever-present use in the United States are concerned, it seems that other lawsuits could follow. Round up is virtually used everywhere and everyone from farmers and other agricultural workers to your neighbor could be at risk depending on their level of exposure.
