According to one of the recent studies, people who experience TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) have a higher chance of risk to develop dementia later in their life. The study was conducted in Sweden on approximately 3.3 million people falling between the age group of 50 or more.


It considered people detected with dementia and TBI between the years 1964 to 2012. The results were also published in ‘PLoS Medicine’. Though the study doesn’t confirm a cause-and-effect relationship, it, on the whole, suggested that there is a relationship between dementia and TBIs.


Increase in Childhood TBIs in between 2001 to 2012


The study is quite helpful as it shows a common strain in the sharp increase in childhood TBIs and concussions that may raise the risk of Dementia in later life. Concussions are the softest form of TBI. In the years between 2001 to 2012, there was a twofold increase in the number of children who got admitted to the emergency departments across the US.
