The PennLive
article noted several factors causing the overall increase in fatal car
accidents:
- The
Number of Pedestrian Accidents Rose Sharply: The
article noted that fatal accidents involving pedestrians increased 34% in 2018. Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation officials did not have enough information to
explain the increase in pedestrian accidents. Obviously, however, the risk of
catastrophic injury and death is much higher when a pedestrian is struck by a
car.
- DUI-Related
Accidents Increased: The
article noted fatal accidents involved drivers under the influence of drugs or
alcohol increased in all three categories of DUI accidents tracked by the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. These findings are alarming, particularly
in light of recent findings that rural Pennsylvania counties are seeing more
fatal DUI’s
than their urban counterparts.
- Fatal
Accidents Involving Elderly Drivers Saw a Huge Increase: The article noted that fatal car accidents
involving drivers aged sixty-five to seventy-four rose 51% in 2018, from 124 to
188.
The article
noted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is working to find ways to
decrease the number of fatal car accidents in Pennsylvania and to reverse these
disturbing trends.
